Rutter Hymn to the Creator of Light SAT

for double SATB choir unaccompanied.

Written For the dedication of the Herbert Howells memorial window in Gloucester Cathedral in 1992, this anthem sets texts by Lancelot Andrewes and Catherine Winkworth.

The first section is full of mystical intensity, and, with its irridescent chormatic harmonies is reminiscent of Howells's own music. After a more lively central section, the finale is ingeniously written and incorporates both the chorale melody and the opening motif.
