To honour the memory of the writer Julius Zeyer on the first anniversary of his death, on 31 May and 1 June 1902 a celebration was held in Prague in the Queen Anne's Summer Palace and in the castle garden, which became a social event. Suk composed an Elegy for these Zeyer celebrations, which (in the summer palace, where a theatre stage with backdrops had been built) was performed as an introduction to the live painting When the Sun of Vyšehrad Set: at the end of Suk's composition, the curtain was raised and a live painting appeared on stage.
Vyšehrad is Zeyer's epic cycle of five narrative poems entitled Libuše, The Green Victor, Vlasta, Ctirad and Lumír. The elegy, originally written for solo violin and cello with accompaniment for strings, harmonium and harp (available as H 7404), is offered in this edition in the composer's arrangement for piano trio.
